The Will Rogers Institute has awarded a $35,000 grant to Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.
According to T. Allen Merritt, MD, MHA, professor of pediatrics and
neonatology, “The Will Rogers Institute grant has enabled LLU Children’s
Hospital to acquire a Servo I ventilator with neurally assisted
ventilatory assistance (NAVA).”NAVA, which had been previously
unavailable at LLU Children’s Hospital, is a unique form of ventilation
that permits the very preterm infant to drive their own ventilation,
detecting the baby’s brainstem output to the phrenic nerve that
innervates the diaphragm.“One of the primary missions of the
Will Rogers Institute,” says Branden Miller, board member and neonatal
committee member of the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation,
“is to promote pulmonary healthcare issues. There is no better way to do
that than to help Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital with the
purchase of this vital neonatal ventilator equipment. This is especially
important to me, as I know firsthand of the great work that is done
here. My daughter, Olivia, was a
preemie born at 28 weeks, who spent the first four-and-a-half months of
her life in the NICU at LLU Children’s Hospital. We are eternally
grateful to the hospital and their amazing staff.” Olivia is shown in photo with nurse Sheri Fraser.
